Julie grew up in the farming community of Myponga on the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia. Victor Harbor has been her home for the past seven years.
Her interest in counselling was sparked, when she was diagnosed with an acquired brain injury at 29 years old due to a virus on her brain stem. Through living with a long-term illness, Julie gained not only knowledge and experience, but also the realisation that there were very few options for support for Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). Julie has always been approachable, warm, and personable and encourages people to simply be themselves without judgment or bias.
She graduated from ACAP (Australian College of Applied Psychology) with a Graduate Diploma of Counselling and is registered with the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA).
Julie’s local experience includes being a volunteer for nine years in a support group for LBGTQIA+ youth and parents of LBGTQIA+ children and young adults.
She has completed additional studies in Understanding Traumatic Brain Injury and Preventing Dementia. Working with a person-cantered approach, she prioritises her clients, acknowledging their individuality and complexity. She values the diverse needs, preferences, and insights clients bring to counselling regarding their well-being.
A person-centred approach acknowledges that people are the experts in their lives, this helps to centre a client in a more positive and inclusive manner. This can provide deeper insight into the difficulties they are facing, whilst maximising their ability to resolve it. Julie supports a therapeutic process that encourages positive change within her clients.
Her professional interests include acquired and traumatic brain injuries and dementia and when not in the office, you will find her kayaking, taking photos, walking or spending quality time with friends and family.
Offering a service where people from all walks of life can be themselves, feel comfortable, gain insight and be listened to, is critical to moving forward."
